When You Leave

Leaving a domestic violence situation is incredibly brave, and having the right resources and items can make a big difference. This page provides guidance on what to bring if you’re planning to leave. Important documents like ID, birth certificates, Social Security cards, and any legal papers (such as restraining orders or custody documents) should be gathered if it’s safe to do so.

Pack essentials like medications, keys, some cash or a prepaid card, a phone and charger, and a few changes of clothes for you and your children. Also consider any comfort items for kids and important contact numbers. Safety comes first—only collect these items if you can do so without putting yourself in greater danger. We’ve also included links to local shelters, 24/7 hotlines, and organizations that can help you plan a safe exit. You are not alone, and support is available.
