DRESSEMBER – WHY A DRESS?

I’m sure if you follow the goings on here at EPEC, you’ve read or know a thing or two about human trafficking. You may know that there are 40.3 million victims of human trafficking globally. You may also know that there were 111 calls to the national hotline from West Virginia in 2018. The same year, over 23,000 victims were identified in the US. Think about all the individuals in West Virginia, nationally, and globally who do not have the means to make a phone call or text into the national hotline. So, you might be thinking – what can a dress do to address this problem?

Dressember started as one woman’s challenge to herself and grew into an international collaborative movement to raise awareness and funds for human trafficking survivors and efforts to end it… by simply wearing a dress.

The challenge? Wear a dress or a tie for the 31 days of December. The act can serve a conversation starter and the wearer launches a personalized campaign to raise funds for human trafficking survivors all around the world. The process? Simple. Commit to wearing a dress or tie every day in December, create a fundraising page, and set a goal. More information on Dressember, how to become involved, or how to donate, visit their website.

And if you’d like to donate locally, EPEC is the Eastern Panhandle’s point agency for serving victim’s of human trafficking, visit our website or outreach offices to donate time, money, or items we need.
